Continuum: A 3D procedural visual space shooter

I always wanted to make a space game, in fact, I had 5 attempts at a different space game. But each time the project was discontinued for various reasons (not being fun enough / bad design / lack of interest). Continuum was one of them, it did not become a space game, but inherited its mechanics to become a rather interesting 3D space shooter (except it does not have a shooting mechanics). The name refers to a genre of 3D games where you would control an object, whether it'd be a plane or a starship, to avoid debris and keep flying for as long as possible.

I started with this idea by using cubes as placeholder models. But it turned out that, the game with cubes alone was pretty fun. So instead of converting it to a full-fledged space themed game, I simply made it a game about cubes.

Beautiful colors and visual + simple game play lies at the heart of this game.

It wasn't hard to make something like this. All you have to do is to design a range of different obstacles, simple stylized geometry, and have it adjust its colors to the “theme color”, which is the background color.

To make the game intuitive, I have also designed different procedural patterns. I even made a table to organize them (unfortunately I've lost the original data sheet)

A level with lasers

Of course, to make it challenging, I also had a level with enemies that would shoot explosive bullets in front of you, to dodge them, you are forced to move around constantly. Of course, the enemies are “not so smart”, as you can trick them to hit an obstacle, to which they will explode with a cool effect.

Enforcers dismembered upon impact

Here's the trailer to Continuum:

I also had to do some marketing with the game. Sending steam keys to various small YouTubers.

Not a lot of these videos exist, but here's one played by a 2.2 million sub YouTuber (although with little views).

Steam page of the game

The game is also available on steam. But it really became famous on the Mac App Store.

A screenshot I took when it was #54 on the free games section on the Mac App Store

I was really proud of it because, Octagon (ranked #57) was briefly overtook by my game. I was a fan of Octagon and were 300+ levels in, so it was really surprising that I could surpass my “idol”. Here's the statistics from Apple:

The game is still available free on the Mac App Store, and now also on the iOS App Store (the game is called Continuum 01).
